9.4 Finding Meaning Post Treatment

Learning Objectives

Describe ways to find meaning post-treatment.

9.4.1 A New Outlook

After your breast cancer experience, you might have a new outlook on life (Canadian Cancer Society, 2018b). You might have a positive outlook with feelings of luckiness and thankfulness. However, you might end up with a negative outlook caused by living with treatment side effects, being unable to work, feeling isolated, and experiencing emotions such as anger and frustration.

Besides a changed outlook, you might have realized what aspects of your life are most important to you, and you may make changes to match that realization (Canadian Cancer Society, 2018b). These changes can include spending more time doing things you enjoy, visiting friends and family, or trying new experiences.

9.4.2 Giving Back

You might find fulfillment by giving back to those who have helped you during your breast cancer journey or by helping others dealing with breast cancer (Canadian Cancer Society, 2018b).

There are a variety of ways you can do this, including:

  • volunteering at your medical or treatment centre
  • participating in breast cancer research,
  • volunteering with a cancer support group,
  • donating money to breast cancer charities,
  • and raising funds for breast cancer research (Canadian Cancer Society, 2018b).
